The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, London at nightFor hundreds of years, people have come to London from all over the world and fallen for its beauty and charm.

Some, more gifted than us when it comes to the spoken or written word, have left a legacy of quotes that have become synonymous with the city.

Here we have a list of a few of them, which show just how much London has been adored by people from all walks of life.

1.  “You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford” – Samuel Johnson (1709 – 1784)

A good way to start the list, London literally does have everything you could want and need. From sights and shows to Royal Parks and Afternoon Tea, there really is nothing that London cannot provide for you.

2.  “I went to London because, for me, it was the home of literature. I went there because of Dickens and Shakespeare.” – Ben Okri, Booker Prize Winner

3.  “There’s nowhere else like London. Nothing at all, anywhere.” – Vivienne Westwood, Fashion Designer

What more is there to say that the iconic fashion designer hasn’t summed up in this short and simple quote?

4.  “It is not the walls that make the city, but the people that live within them. The walls of London may be battered, but the spirit of the Londoner stands resolute and undismayed.” – King George VI (1895 – 1952)

This was part of a live broadcast during the Second World War from the King of England at the time of a bombing offensive in September of 1940. Although the war is a distant memory now, the resolute spirit seems hard-wired into every Londoner.

Unfortunately, the author of this quote is unknown, but we completely agree with them and feel fortunate to live here!

Another gem from the famous poet, Oscar Wilde really did have a way with words, and even a century or so later, we’d probably say he was still right on this!

The former Prime Minister (who actually served the role twice), expressing the idea that London is more than just a place for Londoners and British citizens.  It’s the quintessential international city; where people from all over the world are welcomed and greeted with a smile.
