A Shopper's Guide to London Mayfair | Everything You Need to Know

Are you in need of a little retail therapy?

When you’ve had a busy week, sometimes all you need is to escape to the city for a weekend of excellent shopping (and cocktails back at the hotel after, of course!).

So, we’re sharing our ultimate guide to shopping in Mayfair, to help you start planning your trip early…

Why Choose to Go Shopping in Mayfair?

Nestled in the heart of London's vibrant landscape, Mayfair finds itself amidst the bustling energy of the City of Westminster.

Defined by its proximity to some of London's most iconic streets — Park lane, Piccadilly, Regent Street, and Oxford Street — it’s one of the most prestigious shopping destinations in the UK.

From the high-end boutiques of Burlington Arcade to the charming allure of Shepherd Market, you’ll be in haute-couture-heaven from the moment you step into the district.

Just some of our favourite shops include:

Fortnum and Mason

With everything you could possibly need, from delicious snacks to diamond-studded jewellery, a visit to Fortnum & Mason is a delightful treat for those visiting London.

Splurge on a little something — be it chocolates or a new scarf — and carry it away in the iconic turquoise bag that’ll be sure to bring a smile to your face every time you re-use it.

The Burlington Arcade

Inside the Burlington Arcade, you’ll find exquisite stores just waiting for you to be spoiled and pampered…

From Michael Rose to Manolo Blahnik, it’s brimming with beautiful boutique stores, filled with treasures of every desire.

Pearls for your ears, diamonds for your feet, cashmere for your back — the jewellery, clothes, accessories, and shoes are breathtaking, and will certainly hit the spot when it comes to retail therapy.

Paxton and Whitfield

Cheese might not be top of your list when shopping in Mayfair, but it should be!

Paxton and Whitfield offers a mesmerising display of all kinds of cheese; perfect for taking home and using for meals, cheese boards, picnics, and even fondues.

And, if cheese is your kryptonite, you could even consider joining the Paxton’s cheese club.

Designer Brands

Fall in love with your wardrobe all over again, by treating yourself to staple items from the most famous brand flagships, such as:

  • Gucci;
  • Louis Vuitton;
  • Chanel;
  • Hermes;
  • Dior;
  • And more.

Sophisticated and stylish, these are more than just shops; they’re experiences — and ones you’ll likely never forget, as you make your way through Mayfair’s most luxurious names.

Luxury Homeware

From cushions and candles to wine glasses and vases, Mayfair is bursting with exquisite homeware stores.

So, why not commemorate your weekend away in London by choosing some items to give your home a little lift?

Thomas Goode is a luxurious household name, offering glassware, china, and silverware. And, with two royal warrants to supply the British royal household, you too can live like royalty.

For soft furnishings such as bedding and throws, Frette offers classic, timeless designs that’ll elevate the rooms in your home and wow any guests.

Arts and Antiques

If vintage is more your vibe, Mayfair has you covered there, too.

With plenty of charming antique stores housing gorgeous, dated items — such as the Mayfair Gallery — you’ll be certain to find a piece or two amongst the troves of treasure.

Or, if you’re looking for gorgeous artwork, Mayfair is home to an array of exceptional galleries, displaying elegant paintings and sculptures on every wall.

For quirky and bright, we recommend Maddox Gallery, while for classics we suggest Clarendon Fine Art.

“Wine” Down After Shopping in Mayfair

After spending a day shopping in Mayfair, we know just how tired your feet will be!

Head back to DUKES London, and we’ll look after your every need, from an exquisite wine dinner in GBR to refreshing cocktails in DUKES Bar.

And, our stylish rooms are so comfortable, you can sink into a peaceful slumber before rejoining us the next morning for a hearty breakfast to refuel.

8 Things to Do and See in Hyde Park | Enjoy London's Green Spaces

If you’re wondering what to do in Hyde Park, wonder no more.

From tranquil fountains to adventure playgrounds, there’s plenty to see and do in the popular park.

Whether you’re passing through or spending a day, you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained, no matter how old you are.

About Hyde Park

Spanning 350 acres, with its own lake, gardens, walks, and cafes, Hyde Park offers a tranquil slice of heaven amidst the hustle and bustle of central London.

Hosting live music and concerts in the summer months, and Winter Wonderland throughout the Christmas season, there’s always something to see and do — and there are plenty of beautiful areas to explore off the beaten path.

Just a stone’s throw from DUKES London, it’s the perfect place to venture to during your stay with us; keep reading to find out more about what to do in Hyde Park:

Spend Some Time at the Princess Diana Memorial

The Princess Diana Memorial is a welcoming place for all, offering peace, tranquillity, and moments for reflection.

Designed to represent her life, the water flows from the highest point and cascades down in two directions in a whirl of bubbles, before meeting in a serene pool at the bottom — symbolising her quality and openness.

Crafted using the best materials, talent, and technology, the fountain contains 545 pieces of Cornish granite, each shaped by the latest computer-controlled machinery and pieced together by hand using traditional skills.

There are three bridges where you can cross the water and go right to the heart of the fountain, inviting visitors to really connect with the memorial. Guests can sit on the edge and bathe their feet, but are asked not to walk on the memorial itself.

If you’re exploring Hyde Park, this is truly an unmissable — and unforgettable — experience.

Head to Speaker’s Corner

Speaker’s Corner is a little piece of history that attracts and fascinates tourists from all over.

Used as a platform throughout the ages, iconic and influential figures such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and George Orwell were known to frequent the area to demonstrate free speech.

In 1872, an act of parliament set aside this part of Hyde Park for public speaking — and it’s still used for that very reason today.

If you head down early on a Sunday morning, you may be lucky enough to listen to enthusiasts sharing their views; anyone can turn up unannounced, and speak on any subject (as long as it’s lawful).

It’s a fantastic experience, and really allows you to appreciate London’s legendary history.

Marvel at Marble Arch

Marble Arch is a staggering monument that was originally built as an impressive gateway to Buckingham Palace. In the 1960s it was moved to Hyde Park where it now stands proudly at the entrance.

Crafted using carrara marble, the arch was designed to commemorate the British victories at Trafalgar and Waterloo, with the sculpted reliefs representing England, Scotland and Ireland.

You can wander through the arches during the day or, if you’re feeling adventurous, marvel at them throughout the night, when they’re impressively illuminated with floodlights.

These dramatic light displays are often changed in accordance with special events and occasions, so you may be fortunate enough to experience this, depending on when you visit.

Enjoy a Spot of Boating on the Serpentine

The Serpentine is a 40-acre lake in Hyde Park that's been enjoyed by millions of people since its creation in 1730.

An iconic landmark in London, you can enjoy a range of recreational activities on the water, including different types of boating.

This summer, why not hire a pedalo or row boat to enjoy a unique perspective of Hyde Park from the water? Marvel at unparalleled vistas of one of London’s most beautiful green spaces as you float around Heron Island, or sail to the Serpentine bridge and back…

Make a Splash at Serpentine Lido

If you’re keen to experience cold water swimming, The Serpentine Lido offers exceptional experiences all year round.

Whether you fancy trying it out during a weekend away, or are planning to join the swimming club for regular jaunts, this popular spot is perfect for dipping your toes into wild swimming.

The lido also has its own cafe bar with waterside tables, so you can warm up with an indulgent hot chocolate after your early morning dip!

Indulge in a Luxury Picnic

You don’t have to visit every landmark spot in Hyde Park; it’s more than enough to settle down on the lush grass and watch the world go by.

Pack a picnic and while away the hours in utter tranquillity.

After a delicious lunch, spend some time kicking a ball with the kids, lying on a blanket and reading a book, or simply meandering under the trees with your headphones in, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful surroundings.

Speak to our team to find out about our DUKES picnics…

Explore The Rose Garden

London has some incredible architecture, but it’s not all magnificent buildings and ancient stonework: the city boasts some of the finest city green spaces in the UK, and we recommend venturing to The Rose Garden.

Celebrating 30 years, the garden opened in 1994, and was designed by Colvin and Moggridge Landscape Architects.

The design came from the concept of horns sounding a person’s arrival into Hyde Park; the central circular area, encased in yew hedges, represents the mouth of a horn, while the seasonal flower beds symbolise the musical notes.

Among the glorious roses, there are seasonal plants that attract tourists and locals alike with their vibrant colours and vivacious scents.

Although there’s something to see all year round, the floral displays are particularly mesmerising in the summer months.

Unlock Adventure in the Park’s Playground

If you have children, fear not; there’s plenty to keep them entertained.

The Hyde Park playground features climbing frames, swings, and a slide. Designed with a natural feel, the playground is contrived to encourage imaginative and creative play.

Your children will find friends among the netting, and become pirates, princesses, and playmates, ensuring an afternoon of adventure for them, and a little peace and quiet for you.

Wear them out before bringing them back to our hotel for a delightful slumber, where they can dream about the day’s adventures while you sit back and enjoy a coffee from your in-room coffee machine…

If you’ve been inspired by our guide of what to do in Hyde Park, why not read our previous blog to discover the best things to do in St James’s Park?
