A Day Trip to Windsor: What to See and Do

There’s something captivating about stepping back in time, if only for a day, to explore the charm of Windsor.

Just a short journey from DUKES London, this historic town offers an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of the great outdoors, or simply in search of a delightful day out, a Windsor day trip has something for everyone.

Windsor Castle: A Must-See Royal Residence

As you arrive in the town, the first thing to greet you is the awe-inspiring sight of

. This fortress, with its stately towers and regal gardens, has stood sentinel over the town for nearly a thousand years.

It’s not just the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, but it’s also still very much a working royal palace. His Majesty The King’s presence is often signalled by the fluttering of the Royal Standard from the Round Tower.

Take your time wandering through the State Apartments, including the grand St George’s Hall where state banquets are held. Be sure to also visit St George’s Chapel before you leave, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and the final resting place of many monarchs, including Henry VIII and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Exploring Windsor Town: Boutiques, Pubs, and the Riverside

From the castle, you can then go on to explore the town itself, a delightful mix of contemporary boutiques, cosy cafés, and traditional English pubs. It’s the perfect place to pause and soak in the quintessentially English atmosphere, perhaps over a pint of local ale or a pot of afternoon tea.

As you look around, you’ll soon find yourself drawn towards the

, which winds its way through the heart of Windsor. A walk along the riverside is a must on any Windsor day trip, its tranquil waters lined with willow trees and dotted with snowy white swans.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, why not hire a rowing boat or take a river cruise for a different perspective on this charming town?

The Long Walk: A Stroll Through History

For the outdoor lovers,

is a tree-lined avenue stretching for nearly three miles from Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse statue at the top of Snow Hill. The walk is particularly stunning in the autumn, when the leaves turn golden and crunch beneath your feet.

At the end, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over

, a vast expanse of green that was once the hunting ground of English monarchs. It’s the perfect place to relax after a long day on your feet!

How to Get to Windsor from DUKES London

  • By Train: The most convenient way is to catch a train from London Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside. The journey takes around an hour and trains run frequently throughout the day, with Windsor & Eton Riverside station just a short walk from Windsor Castle.
Alternatively, you can take a train from London Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central, with a change at Slough. This route is slightly quicker, taking around 40 minutes in total.
  • By Car: If you prefer to drive, Windsor is approximately 25 miles from central London. The journey takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. The most direct route is via the M4 motorway, exiting at junction 6 for Windsor. There are several car parks in Windsor, but it’s wise to arrive early, especially during peak tourist season.

DUKES London, the distinguished five-star hotel nestled in the heart of St James’s, Mayfair, is embarking on an exciting new chapter. The hotel has commenced an ambitious renovation project, set to be unveiled by late 2025, marking a transformative moment in its storied history.

A new era for DUKES London

As of January 2025, DUKES London has temporarily closed its doors to allow for extensive refurbishments. However, the renowned DUKES Bar, famed for its legendary martinis served from antique trolleys, remains open throughout the project. Guests can continue to enjoy the quintessentially British atmosphere of the bar, a cherished destination for its timeless charm. With its usual opening hours maintained, DUKES Bar offers a perfect retreat during the refurbishment period.

A vision of sophistication and heritage

This transformative project is being led by the acclaimed interior designer Russell Sage, whose innovative approach promises a thoughtful blend of modern sophistication and classic elegance. Alongside this design vision, the hotel is collaborating with a historian to delve into its rich legacy and the storied history of the surrounding St James’s area. These findings will be seamlessly integrated into the new design, ensuring DUKES London’s heritage is celebrated while embracing a refreshed aesthetic.

A message from the General Manager

Michael Purtill, General Manager at DUKES London, shared his excitement for the project:

“This is a momentous occasion for DUKES London, and we are thrilled to embark on this next chapter. For decades, our loyal guests have cherished the warmth, charm, and intimacy that define the DUKES experience. This refurbishment allows us to preserve those beloved elements while creating a space that feels elegant, inviting, and unforgettable. It’s our way of ensuring that DUKES London remains an icon of British hospitality.”

A storied location in St James’s

Nestled in one of London’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, DUKES London has long been a sanctuary for royalty, writers, musicians, and politicians. St James’s, steeped in history dating back to King Henry VIII’s 16th-century palace, provides an idyllic backdrop for this transformative project.

Stay connected for updates

The refurbishment is expected to conclude in late 2025, with more details about the redesign to be shared in the coming months.

For the latest updates on this exciting project, follow
